Applique
When sewing the term appliqué (or applique) refers to the technique of adding pieces of fabric to other pieces to create a pattern or design. These pieces need not be the same fabric as each other. The technique is not limited to just fabric pieces. Embroidered pieces can also be added or used. This technique thus offers the designer an unlimited number of colours & patterns that can be used to create any effect or design desired. These pieces can be added by hand or machine or in combination. Applique is best seen from a distance but even up close the effect is pronouced. A most impressive historical applique is the Bayeux Tapestry commemerating the Battle of Hastings (UK) in 1066 AD.
