Chalkboard fabric can be sewn just like any other fabric, by hand or machine. All stitch types and threads can be used on your chalkboard fabric.
Your bright shiny black chalkboard fabric has arrived! What do you do now?
Once you have received your chalkboard fabric it is very important to cure it before using within your design or pattern. This is best done by laying a piece of chalk (the colour does not matter!) on it's side on the surface of the chalkboard fabric (or cloth) and rubbing it all over the fabric, side to side and top to bottom. Clean the chalk off the fabric with some cloth. Be wary of using any material that may scratch or mark your new fabric. A soft, lint free cloth is best. Repeat the process again. (This process should be done before you cut the chalkboard fabric to size.) Your fabric is now ready for use.Do not put a crease into the chalkboard fabric. If a crease is put into chalkboard fabric it can never be removed.
For further information on the use and care of your chalkboard fabric. As noted earlier the chalkboard fabric can be treated or used just like any other fabric, it is just a little thicker than the material you will be used to sewing. Your favourite scissors will easily cut the chalkboard fabric. You can hand sew with your favourite needles and threads of all types or you can use a machine. When using a machine be careful to ensure that the foot does not mark the surface. Overlockers can be used as normal.
The cleaning and care of chalkboard fabric is different to that of your other fabrics. Hand washing or cleaning is the preferred method. A machine on a cool, gentle cycle could possibly be used. Do not spin dry or use an iron to dry the chalkboard. Hanging out to dry is the best method but do not put pegs on the chalkboard fabric itself. Do not iron! Ironing will irreparably damage the surface. Please do not dry clean pieces of the chalkboard fabric or pieces with chalkboard fabric on them as the heat of the process could adversely affect the surface of the fabric and render it unable to take chalk or have any chalk cleaned off.
The chalkboard fabric can be transported in ways similar to other fabrics. You can lay it flat against other fabric though ensure the chalkboard is clean as any residue on it's surface will transfer to the other fabric. Chalkboard fabric can also be rolled into cylinder for transport but the cylinder diameter must be such that the chalkboard fabric does not get creased. If a crease is put into chalkboard fabric it can never be removed.
